IX. Tips

The following guidelines are intended to aid you in your enjoyment of Shattered Galaxy.

A. Character Creation

  1. All attributes are believed to be equally useful during gameplay. However, if you begin a new character with below average (10) clout or education, you will find your initial options more limited.

  2. Choose a password that contains both letters and numbers and that does not contain words found in a dictionary.

  3. You will not be able to change your character's name. Choose a name you will be proud of.

B. Starting Out

  1. Ask other players for help.

  2. Purchase a Peregrine or Red Eye to help you locate enemies, resources, and points of contention. The rest of your units should be Footmen to maximize your firepower and minimize repair costs. You will quickly have the resources to experiment with other chassis types and designs.

  3. Don't purchase more units than you can deploy at once. You will be able to deploy 6 or maybe 7 units.

  4. Don't venture more than one province from your capital. You may find yourself trapped in enemy (or alien) territory.

  5. Don't fight players more powerful than you. Use the who list (F6) to determine how strong each nation is at any given time.

  6. Repair your units after every battle.

C. Combat

  1. Use the (A)ttack option to move your units. They will respond to enemy threats encountered while moving.

  2. Give all of your units unique names so that you can easily distinguish them in battle.

  3. Pay close attention to your energy reserves. Try to locate an appropriate refueling point early in the battle (or by checking out the sim first).

  4. Learn the hot keys for commands.

  5. When fighting aliens, concentrate on killing all of them first and capturing objectives later.

D. Unit Design

  1. It is easy to overtax a unit's energy reserves. Remember to consider energy requirements when buying that gatling laser.

  2. Test questionable designs in the sims before heading to the battlefield.

  3. After reaching level 3 or so, at least 1/3 of your combat units should be capable of damaging aircraft.

  4. If you like to cluster your troops, only one of them needs great sensors for all to benefit.
